MythTV is ranked 2nd while Plex is ranked 3rd. The most important reason people chose MythTV is: Allows multiple frontend client machines to access content served by one or more backend servers. Platforms Windows, Linux, Mac, Android. Next PVR allows me to pick which channel to record from, where as, Plex just allows me to click on the shows to record. The upside to Plex is that it is really easy to setup whereas Next PVR takes a bit longer to get going. New product installs:

If you have recently purchased a new WinTV product and your WinTV v8.5 Activation Code has never been used, you can install WinTV v10 with this code. This only applies to unused WinTV v8.5 Activation Codes.

Installation notes for WinTV v8.5:

If you have one of the following products: a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-850, WinTV-HVR-950, the original Colossus or HD PVR model 1212, you must use WinTV v8 or WinTV v10. WinTV v8.5 does not support these products.

A WinTV v8.5 Activation Code will be needed to install this WinTV v8.5 version. If you do not have an Activation Code, but you have a WinTV v7 CD, you can install the WinTV v8 application.

If you do not have an Activation Code: If you do not have a WinTV v8/8.5 Activation Code, you can purchase the new WinTV v10 Activation Code on the Hauppauge webstore for $12.95. This can be used with WinTV-HVR, WinTV-dual and WinTV-quad products, as well as the HD PVR series of HD recorders plus USB-Live2 and the ImpactVCBe.

Extend: If you have an Activation Code for WinTV v8 or v8.5 with Extend, the latest version of WinTV v8.5 with Extend will automatically be installed.

Installation on multiple computers: the WinTV application can be installed on as many PCs as needed as long as you use the same Hauppauge device. We link the serial number of your TV tuner (sometimes it's the MAC address) with the Activation code. So as long as you use the same Hauppauge device, you can install on more than one computer.

Black video window or choppy video when watching a digital TV channel

Plex

If you are watching a digital TV channel and you see choppy video, no audio or a black screen, then it is possible your PC is not fast enough to decode and play the digital TV channel you are watching. Please verify that your system meets the minimum requirements for using the HVR-950Q

Digital TV, especially ATSC high definition digital TV, is very CPU intensive. Many graphics cards have special built-in hardware to speed up decoding of high definition TV channels.

On graphics cards without special video decoding features, you can often improve the playback performance by using the Video Renderer settings located in the settings menu of WinTV 7. To open the setting menu click on the “gear” button located in the lower left of the WinTV 7 screen.

The default mode is EVR. The other modes are VMR9, VMR7 and Overlay. Each mode uses a different process to render video. Try each mode and use the one which gives you the best results. To use hardware acceleration put a check in the box “use hardware acceleration when possible. This will allow your graphics system to use hardware acceleration for video decode. Note: graphics hardware acceleration does not work on all systems. After making a change in video rendering settings Wintv must be restarted to take effect.

If you are using WinTV 6 then the render options are part of a separate program called Primary. Changes in the Primary applet must be made with the WinTV application closed. Open the Primary program by going to Start – All Programs – Hauppauge WinTV – Primary. After making changes close the Primary applet and open the WinTV application.

How do I enable my remote control so it will work with the WinTV-HVR-950Q?

The IR software should be installed by default. To check look for a small remote control icon in the Windows task bar on the lower right. IF it is not present you can reinstall Wintv from the installation CDROM or download IR32.EXE from our support web site. The remote control must also have “line of sight” with the HVR-950Q. The IR receiver of the HVR-950Q is the round bulb on the side of the unit.

I receive a 'Low bit rate' error message when using Windows Media Center in Windows 7.

Microsoft has released Windows Media Center patches for the 'Low bit rate' error message.
Click to view the information from Microsoft.

WinTV application locks or stops responding during analog scan under Windows 7.

In order to fix this issue, please check that your Power Options setting is not set to ‘Power Saver’. Please change it to ‘Balance’ or ‘High Performance’.

To change these settings on Windows 7, please do the following.

Click on Start and then Control Panel.

If Control Panel is set to View by: Category then click on ‘System and Security’ and then ‘Power Options’.

If Control Panel is set to View by: Large or Small icons then click on ‘Power Options’.

If you do not see Balanced or High Performance please click on the option for ‘Show additional plans’.

Once you make the change please restart your system. When the system restarts please rescan again for channels.

What file size will the recorded videos be?

Digital Broadcasts (ATSC or QAM)

The file size of a digital signal capture depends on the bitrate of the digital signal. The bitrate is set by the broadcaster and cannot be user configured. Bitrates for digital signals can range anywhere from about 1.2 Mbits/sec up to 19.3 Mbits/sec. Most of the time these bitrates are variable and not constant. Capture sizes for ATSC & QAM recordings are approximately 1.7 Gigabytes per hour up to 8.3 Gigabytes per hour.

Analog Broadcast.

The WinTV application has to convert analog signals to digital in order to record. There are four recording profiles. The following list shows recording file sizes for burning to 4.3Gb DVD:

Best - Approx 1 Hour+
Better - Approx 1 1/2 Hours
Good - Approx 2 Hours
Fair - Approx 3 Hours

WinTV v7 does not open or opens and then disappears?

This can be caused by a corrupt Channel database so you will need to uninstall and reinstall. First you need to go to start, all programs, Hauppauge Wintv and in that folder run
“uninstall Wintv7” (or remove Wintv7 using control panel 'add/remove programs) then you need to remove the backup channel database.

Windows Vista, 7 and 8 go to C:program data ( this folder is a hidden folder so if you do not see it you need to “show hidden folders “ in your search
Options) once you can get to this folder you will see a folder label “Hauppauge” delete this folder.

Windows XP go to C:documents and settingsall usersshared documentsapplication data ( this folder is a hidden folder so if you do not see it you need to “show hidden folders “ in your search Options) once you can get to this folder you will see a folder label “Hauppauge” delete this folder.

Then download the latest version of Wintv7 located in the support section of the website and reinstall (note: you must have your original CD to validate the download.)

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device error code 52?

This appears to be a bug in windows 64 bit OS. Our drivers are signed.

'Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)'

The following is probably the easiest fix to Error Code 52 on Windows 7 or Windows 8 64bit.

In device manager right click the Hauppauge product under Sound Video and Game Controllers with the exclamation mark and select Uninstall. If you have a USB product you might multiple listings, please right click the first one on the list.

For this example we will use the HVR-950Q.

On the Confirm window please check the box for 'Delete the driver software for this device' and click OK.

Fraunhofer Single Slit This is an attempt to more clearly visualize the nature of single slit diffraction. The phenomenon of diffractioninvolves the spreading out of waves past openings which are on the order of the wavelength of the wave. The Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of a single slit is formed at the focal plane of a lens of focal length 1m. The width of the slit is 0.3 mm. If the third minimum is formed at a distance of 5 mm from the central maximum then calculate the wavelength of light. Fraunhofer diffraction by a single slit. Lecture aims to explain: 1. Diffraction problem basics (reminder) 2. Calculation of the diffraction integral for a long slit 3. Diffraction pattern produced by a single slit 4. Use of a convex lens for observation of Fraunhofer diffraction pattern. Under the Fraunhofer conditions, the wave arrives at the single slit as a plane wave. Divided into segments, each of which can be regarded as a point source, the amplitudes of the segments will have a constant phase displacement from each other, and will form. Fresnel and Fraunhofer Diffraction. The only distinction is the distance between the slit and the screen. In Fraunhofer diffraction the distance is large enough to consider the rays to be parallel. We will limit our discussions to Fraunhofer diffraction (to make the geometry simpler). Repeat the uninstall for the other two 950Q entries. (note you won't be asked to 'confirm device uninstall' again).

Once the drivers are gone on right click on 'Sound, Video Game Controllers' and 'Scan for Hardware Changes'.

Windows should now look online automatically for the 950Q drivers.

Take a look after a few minutes if the drivers are installed automatically properly under Sound Video and Game Controllers.

If they still come back as 'unsigned' try the procedure again.

NotesYou can use a roof top antenna for best reception.

Most set top boxes allow you to switch to Channel 3 or 4. When you scan with WinTV, it will pick up the TV signal on the correct channel.

Some satellite receivers use channels 60, 70 or 73. But when you scan for Analog TV channels, WinTV will pick up whatever channel is being used by your set top box.

Most set top boxes have A/V connections on the back, which can go into the WinTV's A/V input.

Some cable TV networks transmit analog TV channels, so we recommend scanning for both Clear QAM and analog TV.

Not all cable TV networks transmit clear QAM. Check with your local cable TV operator for the availability of clear QAM in your area.

I'd like to use the DVR feature in Cordcutter TV. What's the largest USB thumb drive I can use?

With the latest Cordcutter TV firmware (413 or later), we have added a DVR recording feature to Cordcutter TV which allows you to schedule TV recordings. You need to plug in a USB thumb drive to the back of Cordcutter TV for the recordings to be stored.

While we have tested up to 256Gb USB thumb drives, we have spoken with customers who have used external USB SSD drives up to 1Tb.

Cordcutter TV recordings are made to the USB thumb drive in an MPEG-4 format using H.264 compression. You have a choice, when scheduling a recording, of the quality level of your recordings.

How many hours of TV recordings can I get on my USB thumb drive?

There are three quality levels of recordings you can select with the Cordcutter TV DVR: HD+, HD and Standard. HD+ is 1920x1080, HD is 1280x720 and Standard is 960x720.

HD+ DVR recordings on the Cordcutter TV take about 4 GBytes per hour of TV. So, a 64Gb thumb drive will store about 16 hours of TV. A 128Gb thumb drive will hold 32 hours of TV recordings.

HD DVR recordings on the Cordcutter TV take about 2.2 GBytes per hour of TV. So, a 64Gb thumb drive will store about 30 hours of TV. A 128Gb thumb drive will hold 60 hours of TV recordings.

Cordcutter TV recordings are made to the USB thumb drive in an MPEG-4 format using H.264 compression. You have a choice, when scheduling a recording, of the quality level of your recordings.

How can I record live TV from my Cordcutter TV to my iPhone or iPad?

When you open the myTV app on your iPhone, iPad or Android tablet or phone, put the device in 'landscape' mode (video running left to right). On an Android device, these recordings are kept in the Internal Storage -> Movies -> Recordings. You can play them from the myTV app or you can play them from Internal Storage. On the iPhone/iPad, you can only play the videos from the myTV app.

Can I watch Cordcutter TV while I'm outside my house?

Currently, Cordcutter TV only works to the limits of your router. For example, if you are at your swimming pool and are in WiFi range of the router, you can watch Cordcutter TV on your WiFi connected device. But if you are out of the WiFi range, you cannot watch TV from Cordcutter.

Adding streaming out of the house is on our list of things to add and this will be a software update.

I want to connect Cordcutter TV with WiFi. Which type of WiFi do you recommend?

We recommend 802.11n or faster.

While the Cordcutter TV is compatible with WiFi standards 802.11g, 802.11n or 802.11ac (or faster), you are better off if your network is 802.11n or faster. The Cordcutter only needs about 10Mbits/sec per TV channel using the dual transcoders. But with 2 channels streaming to and from the router at the same time, you are using close to 50% of the available 'bandwidth' of 802.11g.

But 802.11n has 10x the speeds compared with 802.11g and should easily handle two live TV channels.

How many devices can I connect to Cordcutter TV?

You can mix and match devices with Cordcutter TV (for example: Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad or AppleTV plus Android devices like a tablet or the FireTV or Roku box). The only limits are that you can only have two devices streaming from Cordcutter TV at the same time and all devices need to be on the same WiFi network.

To connect another device, download and install the Hauppauge myTV app from your app storet.

Please note: all devices connected to your Cordcutter TV must to be on the same WiFi network.

Is Cordcutter TV compatible with the FireTV stick?

Maybe. Cordcutter TV is compatible with all FireTV boxes, but some early FireTV sticks were not fast enough to run the Cordcutter TV streaming live TV. The newest FireTV sticks will work with Cordcutter TV, and like the FireTV box, you can find the Hauppauge myTV app for FireTV on the Amazon app store.

If you have a question on an older FireTV stick, please contact us at [email protected] and we will research your FireTV stick version and let you know if it will work.

Is there any security with Cordcutter TV?

Yes. Security is done through your WiFi password.
