Bien Nacido Vineyard Map

Location: Santa Maria Valley, California

From the old vines of Bien Nacido's G Block, this is a fascinating counterpoint to our estate wines, showing the incredible contrast between these two sites. While our estate is composed of sand, Bien Nacido has much denser, rockier sooils, with clay and sandstone forming the majority of this block. Bien Nacido Vineyards Wines

Bien Nacido Vineyard is located in the the Santa Maria Valley, one of the coolest climates for growing Pinot Noir in California. The west-to-east orientation of the Santa Ynez Mountains allows the Pacific marine layer to reach further inland and maintain lower average temperatures than surrounding regions. Wines derived from Bien Nacido Vineyard are often defined by this maritime character along with bright red fruit with rose petal aromatics.

For our single-vineyard Pinot Noir, we source grapes from several organically-farmed hillside plantings as well as Block N, one of the original 1972 plantings of Martini clone.

The Miller Family, owners of the vineyard and a fifth-generation California farming family who can owned the property since 1969, are incredibly selective with the wineries that receive fruit from Bien Nacido Vineyard. We began with only 10 rows from Block 7 but have expanded to two acres, thanks to our long-standing relationship.

Harvest at Bien Nacido happens in the middle of the night so fruit can be quickly, and carefully, transported north to our winery.

Santa Maria Valley AVA

The Santa Maria Valley AVA is located in the northern end of Santa Barbara County, where the costal valleys run east-west.

This topography—unique to California—allows ocean breezes to sweep eastward, channeled by the hills and mountains that ring the region. The valley’s foggy days can be attributed to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, too. The oldest appellation in this region of California, Santa Maria Valley is home to vines dating back to the 1800s.

Fog: Cooler waters from the north sweep down to meet warmer waters from Santa Barbara in the south to create an intense fog

Temperature: Bien Nacido Vineyard has one of the coolest climates in California. Fog doesn’t lift till midday, creating a specific mesoclimate of milder weather and less diurnal range—perfect for slowly ripening Pinot Noir

Wind: Constant and gentle winds sweep eastward, channeled by the hills and mountains

On the north side of the Sisquoc River and north of Santa Barbara is Bien Nacido Vineyard.

“Every Bien Nacido-designated wine is tasted by the Millers to make sure it meets their standards; occasionally they’ve had to tell a producer it couldn’t put the Bien Nacido name on its label.” —The Wall Street Journal

Description: Bien Nacido Vineyards consists of over 600 acres, of which over 250 acres are planted to Chardonnay, over 200 to Pinot Noir, and a number of acres each to Pinot Blanc, Syrah, and Merlot. Since 1992, experimental plantings of Pinot Gris, Barbera, Rousanne, Nebiollo and Viognier, as well as new clones of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Merlot, have been added. Bien Nacido has the distinction of being one of the major viticultural nurseries in the state for certified, varietal budwood. Most of the vines were originally from stock grown by the University of California at Davis. While the average increase block in California is less than 10 acres, Bien Nacido Vineyards® has several hundred acres of certified Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and a number of other varieties. Much of the Chardonnay planted in California in the last twenty years began as Bien Nacido Vineyard cuttings. As the grapevines on Bien Nacido Vineyards have grown, so have the other Miller family operations associated with the vineyard. There are two winemaking facilities on the property, one of which is leased to Bob Lindquist of Qupe Winery and Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat Winery, and the other is leased to Jeff Fink and Bill Cates of Tantara Winery. At their Central Coast Wine Services, located in Santa Maria, custom wine making services have been offered to commercial size clients since 1995. Services include pressing or crushing of grapes into juice, processing fruit into finished wine, barrel and case good storage, bottling, assistance with compliance issues, and lab analysis. In addition, it serves as a home for 25+ boutique wineries. Each of these developments has contributed to further the progress of the Santa Maria wine growing region while increasing the recognition and role of Bien Nacido Vineyards®. It is a symbiotic relationship that has been rewarding for all involved. It is the combination of the 'terroir' of Bien Nacido Vineyards®, the people who manage it, and the close relationships they have developed with others in the wine industry of the region that makes Bien Nacido Vineyards and the Santa Maria region unique in the wine industry.
